Bob Himel, Greg Feere, Margaret (Eseltine) Shelleda and Peggy Dalton organized a heck of a reunion; campus tour, football game, saloon get-together, catered picnic. Thanks, folks!

Words

The Class of 1966 45th Reunion is now a part of our history. During the two days of the reunion we saw a banner that said "Class of 66 Forever". How true that is! We have had 9 reunions, one every 5 years since our graduation. During the 5 year reunion, conversations might include subjects such as college, jobs, marriage, etc. During the 45th reunion, conversations tended toward retirement, grandchildren, and hobbies.

Whether you have just attended one or multiple reunions, reconnecting with old friends is priceless. And because we had a class of over 600, it was impossible to know everyone. Our reunions have given us the opportunity to make new connections and friends we didn't have during our high school years. We have some amazing, fun and awesome classmates!

So even if you didn't like school, you will love your classmates. They will remind you of fun times you may have forgotten or tell you about some you didn't know about. It's a great stroll down memory lane. Remember to thank our committee members (past and present) for stepping up and putting in long hours of work to get us together. They have to make decisions and come up with ideas that affect us all. It can be pretty daunting at times to know what you decide might not be agreeable to everyone.

We now have those who have signed up to plan our 50th reunion. When we know who they are, support them, give them your ideas, and help contact others. For those of you reading this and haven't been to a reunion - someone is probably asking about you and wanting to make contact. Remember, Life is a Journey - not a Destination. Please join us on the journey.

Our committee did a wonderful job organizing the union. We started with a tour of the school, led by the current principal. I realized walking through the halls that the word "dump" is cruel, but the Mount Diablo Unified School district was scrambling when they built it; too many studentspouring in, too small a tax base. Wood frame, stucco walls, minimal landscaping, five wings that looked about the same from the outside. 50 years of that same small tax base, and the old school is looking ragged around the edges.

We had great teachers though; two-story brick classroom buildings covered with ivy don't make a good school; good teachers do. We had some great ones. Our class has produced a couple of doctors, half a dozen lawyers, civic leaders, college professors, soldiers, sailors, marines and more. You don't judge a cake by how shiny an oven it came out of.

Some of our teachers now have rooms named for them. The library is dedicated to Jack Ferrari, our first librarian. It, in turn, as a small student art gallery dedicated to James Enemark, everyone's favorite art teacher. The large gym is named for Dan Della, our first principal.

On to the football game, where we discovered the band has been reduced from the marching band in hot, heavy, wool uniforms that we knew to a rally band that sat in the Stadium, in spiffy matching T-shirts. They have more cheerleaders than we did, and their costumes, again, look lighter, cheaper, and more comfortable - in hot weather - than the old ones.

Brian Englund did his usual wonderful job at the picnic; the tri-tip was especially good. Glenn Paetz has taken up bag piping and came in a kilt. I offered to go with him sometime to knock on doors of apartments for rent, with his bagpipe. Most of us are older than we used to be, and many of us weigh little bit more. You can see that in the three picture galleries our classmates have provided. It was a great reunion.
