Going Upriver

Taking my ease on the bow of a river boat heading upstream. You took the bus for thirty cents to a bridge, then cadged a ride. The busses were regular if slow in Sarawak, and charged by the mile. When someone mentioned a distance normally traveled by bus, he might use miles, hours or bus fare. ("I live two dollars away, Sir.") One measure converted readily into another.
